Progress becomes an object
The desk book is built from a back board, a front board, a leather spine and a sheaf of paper for each earned case file, so its thickness changes as the collection grows.
Correspondent tabs make it possible to jump to a file while keeping sequential paging.
Follow the whole transition
The August review corrected three faults in the transition:
- A cover that rotated through the text block.
- A gap along the bound edge.
- A reading page that appeared at its destination before the book arrived.
The final sequence keeps the leaf dark until the book reaches the reading position and the cover begins to lift.
Look at what survives the focus effect
The focus effect on the contact cards first blurred the room by sampling the screen. It drew last, from a capture taken before the room's transparent elements, so the lace curtain and the candle flame vanished behind it. A dimming version that replaced it left the room grey and washed out. The focus treatment moved to depth of field, which follows depth and leaves colour alone.
A case file page reported as blurry turned out to be too small. Rendering the leaf at three supersample levels returned the same sharpness each time. Setting the type larger raised it.
| Case file leaf | Measured sharpness |
|---|---|
| Leaf rendered at 1x supersample | 2.06 |
| Leaf rendered at 2x supersample | 2.10 |
| Leaf rendered at 3x supersample | 2.10 |
| File page body type 28 → 36, role line 26 → 32 | 2.14 → 3.03 |
The capture at the top of this page shows the title screen and study as they stood on September 13, 2026. It is not a recording of the casebook transitions.
What I learned
State can be correct while the picture is wrong. A visible node does not prove that its cover opens in the right direction, its binding touches the paper, or its text is large enough to read.

Sincerely, Wren docs/STATUS.md, August 27 fortieth-pass account; book_boards.gd and commits d7208c3, 9537c6a and 40ba1e1. The focus-effect history and the sharpness measurements come from the thirty-seventh to thirty-ninth pass accounts in the same file (all August 27), and the gate counts from the fortieth-pass test table. Running source captured September 13, 2026 with an isolated new-game profile. No private letters or saves are published.
This retrospective separates the original work date from publication. Historical test results are not claims of a new test run.
