Skyfang Squadron · Retrospective

Make the ship point where the player is aiming.

The flight prototype's latest retained milestone combines reticle-driven aiming with a more deliberately staged first level.

Aiming has its own motion

The ship controller carries a movable reticle, recentering behavior and a separate aim gimbal.

The nose follows the aim while movement stays within the flight corridor. That separates where the ship travels from where the player wants to shoot.

A dark space scene: the blue and orange player ship seen from behind, a cyan crosshair at lower left, a cyan laser bolt beside brown starship wrecks, a line of blue ring markers along the rail and faint red and blue nebula clouds.

Give the route a rhythm

The April level redesign adds roller-coaster movement, slot gates and an escort section. Tutorials and iteration polish follow in the next milestone, committed the same day.

The image at the top of this page now shows the running prototype rather than the title artwork.

Still a prototype

The project remains an on-rails Godot shooter with procedurally assembled scenery and combat encounters.

This devlog documents the retained April implementation. It does not announce a finished campaign or a newly released public build.

What I learned

The reticle, ship nose and flight corridor each communicate a different constraint. Their relationship needs to be readable during movement, not just when the scene is paused.

Sources & development context

Skyfang Squadron commits f2263f6 and ffea675; scripts/player_ship.gd, game_world.gd and README. Work date is April 13. A fresh local gameplay capture was rendered September 13, 2026. The two figures are captures committed to the repository on April 13 (dc64be3 and ffea675).

This retrospective separates the original work date from publication. Historical test results are not claims of a new test run.
